Hello to One and All!
Within a few short weeks the holy seasons of Lent will be upon us. Lent is a season of reflection and renewal as we prepare to receive the Resurrection of Christ anew in our lives at Easter. Lent is a tradition that began in the early Church that we continue to this day – we join Christ as he reflected in the desert for 40 days. Our faith asks us to take on three disciplines during lent:
- Prayer – We should be praying daily, but Lent is a season we should look for extra ways to involve ourselves in a dialogue with God. If it be through using the Saginaw Diocese's "Black book" which will be distributed after all the Masses in mid-February or attending Friday Stations of the Cross; Lent is a time to listen for the Lord
- Fasting —While this does speak to the fasting we are called to do on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, the intention of the Church is broader. Most people associate Lent with "giving something up". We do this not just out of habit but in recognition that we are not living our lives as we should. So we give up eating between meals, or swearing, or the multitude of other actions people choose as an act of sorrow and as a process of changing our lives
- Almsgiving—Jesus said that we would have the poor with us always. He also called us to realize that it is our responsibility to reach out and do something for those who are in need. During Lent we look to incorporate ways we can channel some of our funds or time to benefit others in need. And example might be we may choose to give up our morning Latte because we know it's not good for us. We can then take the money we save and offer it to a charity of our choice.
