Monday, Sept. 15th

Hi everyone!

This week, the meeting was about disabilities and how we make judgments from what we hear and see. The activities were used to let everyone better understand how a person with a certain disability would do an everyday activity. We split everyone into four sections.
The first group was in the kitchen - they were blindfolded and were told they had to make a sandwich, much the same way a blind person would, by asking where things were and sometimes guessing. Check out the pictures on the photo board because it was really funny to watch.
The second group was on the stage in the gym and they were given a paragraph to read except the letters were switched around. After trying to decipher, they had a few questions to answer that were also jumbled. This was trying to represent how difficult it would be for someone with dyslexia to read.
The third station was in the gym, it had two parts, people had to wheel themselves across the gym in a wheel chair and get their "school books" and then take them back. The other part involved playing with play dough. Everyone was told to make certain shapes but they were only allowed to use one hand. These were meant to represent a person with a broken arm or leg, or even paralysis.
The final stop was in the youth center. Everyone watched a movie clip from "Edward Scissorhands." The first scene showed Edward when he was being accepted for the first time by someone. The second showed some of Edward's special talents. It showed how people who are different can also do really great things that you and I would never be able to.
