To start off, the group was split up into groups of 4 and were asked to make up cheesy pick up lines and a way to reject it. Next, each teen was given a colorful piece of paper with different shapes on it. Since they were all asked to trade their piece of paper, the shape on the paper determined who they could trade with. Soon, everyone was told that the cards represented a special gift from God, and the different colors showed negative outcomes that come from not being careful with who you choose to be close with.
Different parts of the room where labeled with percentage signs and statements and facts were read, and where they chose to stand depended on how much they agreed with the statement. Following this, the group was given the results of a survey that was previously given out to the youth group.
Next, the teens were given a sheet of paper to write down different ways that you can show someone that you love them without having sex. Lastly, the teens watched clips from Jason Everet and ended the night with closing prayer.

March 16th, 23rd, and 30th

  <u3:p></u3:p>

<u3:p></u3:p>
  <u3:p></u3:p>

Monday, March 9th

On Monday, March 9th, we didn't have a regular youth group meeting. To start, everyone was given a handout and asked to answer questions about someone they admired or thought was very self confident. Next, the boys and girls were split up and asked to describe the perfect boy or girl. Through this activity people were shown that everyone's definition of "perfect" is different, therefor there is not such thing as a "perfect" person. The group then evaluated a barbie doll, pointing out the things about her that make her unrealistic, for example- if she were a real person, she would be 7 feet tall, she is always smiling, wears too much make up, etc. Lastly, everyone wrote how self confident they believed themselves to be and all the answers were put on a timeline from 0%- 100%. The boys wrote on green sticky notes and girls wrote on yellow notes so the different levels of gender self confidence could be seen.
~Kara Campbell

Reminders - we don't have a regular Youth Group meeting this coming Monday so please read these reminders below so you get permission slips in on time!

**Pistons Game - THIS FRIDAY - 6:30pm-midnight, $25. To begin, we split the group in half- one half broke up into teams and competed in a game that asked questions dealing with car theft, house burglaries, and other harmful situations. The other half was given scenarios dealing with problems that occur and were asked to read each and decide how to solve them and how the situation could have been prevented. When both halves of the group were done with their activities, they switched.
Next, the teens watched a clip from the movie "Miss Congeniality", and also 2 clips of "Essentials of Krav Maga Self Defense Techniques". The activities the group participated in included a scavenger hunt for not so good snacks, which, once found, had a better snack option inside. Also, everyone wrote what they ate that day and then they could see what was unhealthy and what could change. Finally, three groups looked at the nutrition guides for popular fast food restaurants and found the least healthy meals and then looked for what smarter choices would be. After working in groups, we watched some clips from the movies "Over the Hedge" and "Supersize Me", and had focus questions about over eating. Everyone came away with some useful information about making more informed choices.
~Bailey Hryczyk

Monday, Jan. 5th, 2009

This past Monday Justice, Peace & Service had the meeting. We did our meeting on needs, wants and blessings. First we watched a short movie clip, then we split up into 6 groups. Each group had to decide how to spend money for a family with a different economic level. The groups got a list of items the families could buy and how much they cost, and each family had a different budget. The teens had to decide how to use the budget to meet the family's needs. The next activity divided the group into 4's, and each person played a role in a family: mom, dad, teen, tween. Each "family" was told they had an extra thousand dollars to spend, and a list of things they could buy, and each family had to decide what would be best for the family. They also had to make a decision about spending more than the $1000 and going into debt. After another movie clip and a wrap up, we ended the meeting with a closing prayer & song.
~Tessa Parratto

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Monday, November 17th's meeting was dealing with how media and TV has a big influence on our lives. During the meeting we discussed the TV shows that were most popular and what influence the show had on its viewers. Their meeting topic was building a firm foundation with God. Before the meat of the meeting started we made Christmas cards for the Calling Birds, which they send to the sick elderly. Also anyone who didn’t go to fall retreat also got a chance to paint their mugs. When the meeting actually started we split into groups and each group had to build a tower made with a deck of cards. Only one of the groups actually succeeded in building a tower that didn’t blow over, when we blew on it. Our next activity that we did was we split into small groups and we had to either make a skit about a good relationship with God or a bad relationship with God. After the groups presented their skits we had a wrap up that included questions that told people some ways that they could get closer to God.
~Heather Sobeck

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Monday, November 3rd, 2008
Monday night's meeting was on Juvenile Justice and whether people under the age of 18 can be tried as adults. First of we started by doing opening prayer and then the ice breaker which was the name game. By doing this we got to know each others names better. For the meat of the meeting we started of by having everyone get in groups and write down what made them mad on news print. After they came back and we had them present and told them the definition of anger. Then they went by themselves and did a reflection, got back with the groups they were in and discussed the answers. After that was all done we had a meditation which was great, its were we turn of the lights and listened to calming music. We started the meeting by splitting the teens and adults into five small groups. Each small group compared life as a teen today with what it was like when our parents were teens. Then the teens and adults each did a skit about hanging out with friends on Saturday night, getting in trouble, dating, after school job, or dancing. Watching the parents star in skits was really fun, especially the dancing ones! After the skits, we closed with prayer.
~Rene Goryca

Signups & handouts:

* Evergreen Orders & Right to Life Cards sales are continuing this weekend, October 18th and 19th. At the beginning of the meeting, we introduced our polar bear, which we are adopting from the Detroit Zoo. We will be collecting money every week to go towards the adoption until we have enough to pay the fee (but the kid can still comes first!) Next we did an icebeaker called Animal charades. We had 6 people in a group and each one was a different animal. For the main part of the meeting, we had everyone draw a picture of what they thought was most beautiful. Then we had them pass the pictures to the left, and have the next person draw a piece of trash. It went all the way around the table and each person did that. Then we asked them how they felt after their pictures were covered in trash. We had a discussion on pollution and how we each pollute every day, followed by a discussion on ways to help the environment.
~Tessa Parratto

Signups & handouts:

* Evergreen Orders & Right to Life Cards sales are beginning this weekend, October 11th and 12th and continues the following weekend of October 18th and 19th. So for our meeting we did a murder mystery. We had teens and adults play the parts of the characters, and the youth had to figure out who the killer was based on clues. We had tables set up and the youth had to go around to the tables and get clues from each character to try to figure out who did it. We had four rounds of 10 minutes long, for people to try to get as many clues as they possibly could. In the end 7 people guessed the right murderer. The object of the activities were to make teens aware of the
big responsibility that they take on while in a car, and also how to make good
decisions about other people who may be driving them from place
to place.
To start off the meeting, we handed out
questions for everyone to make their best guesses on about interesting facts
related to motor vehicles and driving. After informing everyone of
the answers, we split the teens up into smaller groups. Each person
was given a character in which they would pretend to be, a problem that
character had come across, and two choices to choose from on how to solve
the problem. It was fun to see how different people would react to
similar situations that they were forced to be put in.
We showed 3 video clips for everyone to
watch which included- a scene form Dr. Phil about a girl who caused a
great amount of damage due to texting while driving, and 2 other
clips which strongly showed the consequences of bad decisions
that were made from teens who were destructively driving.
To end the night we played the
popular song "Jesus Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood for
closing prayer.
~Kara Campbell

Signups & handouts:
* Evangelization Gatherings – this Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday (Sept. 28-30)
from 6:30-9:30pm each night. The activities were used to let everyone better understand how a person with a certain disability would do an everyday activity. We split everyone into four sections.

The first group was in the kitchen - they were blindfolded and were told they had to make a sandwich, much the same way a blind person would, by asking where things were and sometimes guessing. Check out the pictures on the photo board because it was really funny to watch.

The second group was on the stage in the gym and they were given a paragraph to read except the letters were switched around. After trying to decipher, they had a few questions to answer that were also jumbled. This was trying to represent how difficult it would be for someone with dyslexia to read.

The third station was in the gym, it had two parts, people had to wheel themselves across the gym in a wheel chair and get their "school books" and then take them back. The other part involved playing with play dough. Everyone was told to make certain shapes but they were only allowed to use one hand. These were meant to represent a person with a broken arm or leg, or even paralysis.

The final stop was in the youth center. Everyone watched a movie clip from "Edward Scissorhands." The first scene showed Edward when he was being accepted for the first time by someone. The second showed some of Edward's special talents. It showed how people who are different can also do really great things that you and I would never be able to.
~Bailey Hryczyk

Signups & handouts:
* Premiere Night - this Friday, Sept. 19th - 7-10pm - our first fun night of the year, with music, open gym, games, DDR & Guitar Hero, coloring, and an ice cream bar!
